Worth the Drive: OC Foodies Head to Little Tokyo for Tenkaippin’s Famous Kotteri Ramen

Orange County ramen lovers are used to strong options close to home, but a new arrival in Los Angeles is giving foodies a compelling reason to make the drive north. Tenkaippin, the Kyoto born ramen chain credited with creating the original Kotteri ramen, has opened in Little Tokyo and is already drawing serious attention.

Located at 333 East 1st Street in Los Angeles, Tenkaippin is not just another ramen shop. It is the birthplace of Kotteri, a word that describes a broth that is intensely rich and thick. When founder Tsutomu Kimura first introduced his chicken based broth in 1971, it was unlike anything else in Japan. Customers began referring to it simply as Kotteri ramen, and over time the term became synonymous with the brand itself.

What makes this bowl special is its texture. The broth is concentrated and velvety, coating noodles in a way that delivers maximum flavor with every bite. It is hearty yet balanced, rich yet refined. That innovation sparked a devoted following in Japan and fueled expansion to more than 200 locations nationwide.

Now, Southern California diners can taste the original version in Little Tokyo. The location stays open late, operating Sunday through Thursday from 11:00am to midnight, and Friday and Saturday until 2:00am. It is closed on Wednesdays.

For OC residents who take ramen seriously, Tenkaippin offers something rare. This is not a fusion concept or a modern reinterpretation. It is the authentic Kotteri ramen that defined a category. Sometimes, the best food experiences are worth a short road trip.
